Last night, I had a dream
I found myself in a desert called Cyberland
Well, not really. I was back in high school, and the drama club was doing a production of RENT. I was supposed to play Roger, but at the last minute I they switched me and on the night of the performance I was playing Benny. There was this guy I had a crush on in high school there, and he was playing Mark. He looked really hot in the glasses. Like dorky-hot. Anyway, the director was the conductor of the choir I'm in right now. And on the night of the performance he decided he didn't like the set design. He kept going on and on about the evils of minimalist design and throwing a hissy fit that delayed the opening of the show while the cast tried to gently guide him toward the realization that it was really too late to change anything now. He delayed the start of the show so long that I had to go to the bathroom, so I went into the one in the hall way behind the auditorium. In the bathroom was a urinal and large bed with a lavender comfortor. Laying in the bed was M from work. She didn't seem all that interested in leaving so I could pee, and for some reason, I didn't want to ask her directly, so I ended up peeing with my back to her. Then I went back to the stage and the show started.
The new Roger was very good and I remember my dream-self thinking that he was doing a much better job than I could've done. Mark's mom was terrible. She screwed up her lines and instead of talking about Maureen dumping Mark and becoming a lesbian, she sang the "We're all impressed that the riot footage made the nightly news..." line. I remember thinking that Amy Ehrlich was much better. That's where the dream ended. I didn't wake up, but the dream ended there. I'm actually surprised that I dreamed the music so vividly. Usually I don't dream music. The only way to get music into my dreams is to play it in real life so that my subconscious can incorporate it(and boy howdy does that get funny sometimes). But the only song from RENT on my playlist last night was Will I? and that never made it into the dream.
Yesterday, Dec, 6 was Amy Ehrlich's last show with RENT. I'm taking Karen today for her birthday. I'm disappointed I didn't get to see her one more time. We were going to go the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, but Karen's mom was visiting and we all had varying degrees of colds. She wasn't the best singer in the world, but she was a really sweet girl. I saw her play Maureen and afterward, she signed my 'Moo with me' stuffed cow. She just thought that was the coolest thing. Then when we told her that we were from the Allentown, PA area she got all excited because "That's where Peggy Sawyer is from in 42nd Street!" And that was when I knew I would love her forever. And ever since that day, she remembered us and would give us a big smile and wave whenever she saw us. She'd congratulate us for winning lottery, and always thank us for coming to the show. We'd ask her if she knew if she was going to do Maureen again and she'd get this dreamy look in her eyes and tell us she didn't know for sure, but she was hoping she'd get to do it one more time. I'm gonna miss her.
