Not to be all anti-Atkins or anything, but just a quick warning about going into a ketotic state.
First off, there is a big difference between diabetic ketoacidosis and dietary ketosis. If you have diabetes or for some other reason don't produce your own insulin I /highly/ recommend seeing a doctor before doing Atkins. That being said, on to ketosis!
Forcing your body into a ketotic state is a very effective way of losing weight fast, since you aren't intaking sufficient carbs that can be converted into glucose, your body instead turns to your fat stores. This you probably already knew, but I'm feeling verbose today so please forgive. *grin* But like anything else in the world, it is all about moderation. After reducing to your desired weight, it is highly advisable to slowly re-integrate a balanced diet into your system. There are some interesting studies that show that prolonged ketotic states can cause kidney failure and lean muscle mass loss. Now, of course, there is the opposition that say that it is perfectly fine and there are no nasty side-effects. In general, no one says that a balanced, healthy diet is bad for you so it seems like short stints (oh say 6-10 weeks) of Atkins would seem to be a great way of taking the initial weight off and giving you the enrgy to exercise, so more power to it. Just be careful and monitor your health while doing so.
Whoa! I just Public Service Announcement-ed all over your journal. I feel like such a tool. I just know so many people are getting into Atkin's w/o any warnings whatsoever, it's just all - it's the most perfectest diet ev-ah! Seems like if it was, we would have been doing it all along. *shrug* You are a smart guy, I'm sure you've read tons on it. Get all skinny and healthy, but be careful...and wear your mittens!
Coop (with 4 out of 10 friends on some variation of Atkins right now, makes dinner parties a bitch! *lol*)
