You don't think that it's an ego trip, deep down inside? That they don't want to show weakness by asking for help? I don't think it's necessarily conscious, but I think it's a factor.

Speaking as someone who once circumnavigated the state of New Jersey in an attempt to find his way home after taking one wrong turn on the way back from Philadelphia that it's all about not showing weakness by asking for help.

If the intent was to provoke the writing of some sort of essay they probably shouldn't have asked a yes/no question.
