When I got to work today I found that not only was I the only nurse on my floor, I was also the supervisor. The best part came when I was told to expect three new admissions. God bless D. who stayed until five to help me with meds so I could start on the first of the three. And thank goodness for L. who came in at seven even though she has to work tomorrow morning. Still even with the extra help, I was busy all night long. One of our doctors was apparently in an argument with the other members of her practice over who was on call tonight, so the admission who arrived at six didn't get his orders until ten. I'm glad it wasn't an emergency. We've got a man dying and I'm so glad he hung on until the end of my shift because I really did not need that mountain of papers to deal with(I'm sorry if that sounds insensitive, but you need a certain amount of detachment in a career where people die on a semi-regular basis).

I'm actually looking forward to work tomorrow. I won't be charge nurse. I won't be supervisor. We're getting an admission, but I won't have to do it. I just have to pass meds and do treatments. It's not as good as having saturday off, but it's not as bad as today.
