I spent my Saturday off with Megan. We went to New York. We got in around 3, bummed around for a bit, then went to Virgin where I got some movies. Then we tried our luck at the RENT lotto, and didn't get in. So we bought tickets instead. Meg had never seen it before, so it was pretty cool that I got to take her. After intermission, she turned to me and said "I want to see it again. I know it's not over yet and I already want to see it again." Which I knew she would. After the show let out, she was just gushing. It made me so happy that she'd enjoyed it. She wanted autographs, but was too nervous to ask, so I got her some. Some actually, I've never gotten for myself. Last night was the first night I managed to corner Mark Richard Ford, and it was also the first night I managed to tell Karmine Alers how fabulous I thought she was rather than just thrusting my Playbill at her. I got Sebastian's for her, and Matt Caplan's as well. I didn't get much chance to tell Matt what a great job I thought he did because he was being pretty well mobbed and actually looked like he was in sort of a hurry.
This was the first time I'd ever seen anyone but Joey as Mark, and I have to say Matt was phenomenal. I'm not blinded by my *NSYNC love so much that I can't say that he's better than Joey EXCEPT in Halloween. Joey singing Halloween could always bring tears to my eyes. I have never heard a more detached or unemotional rendition of this song than I did last night. And I know Mark is supposed to be a detached kind of person, but this song is his soliloquy. This is the only point during the play where Mark truly contemplates his own situation, where he turns the camera on himself. It should be an emotional moment. It was also weird seeing Tango Maureen. Matt's got a slightly different take on some of the lines. No better or worse than Joey's just different.
On the purely physical side, he's fucking cute. There's this part in La Vie Boheme where he raises his hands above his head, and we see some belly. Mmmmmm. And speaking of physical, Sebastian Arcelus just gets more beautiful every time I see him. I find myself fascinated by the tattoo on his hand. I love him as Roger, and now that he's not just filling in for Manley he's doing a bit more to make it his own. He and Matt have great chemistry. One thing I noticed last night is that the cast is almost completely different from the first time I saw the show. I didn't notice it so much when Maggie and Myiia left, but now that Joey and Manley are gone as well, the whole show just seems to have a different kind of energy. It's nothing I can explain. It just felt different. I guess I'll just have to go again.
