In what secret room was it decided that marriage was the hot button issue? Because 2 years ago or so all I heard out of the gay community was 'marriage this' and 'marriage that'. And then there was my little voice saying "We're not there yet, the country's not ready for it yet, and this is just going to force liberals in the senate to take a stand against us if they want to keep their jobs."

And I'll tell you that I support gay marriage intellectually because it is essentially fair. It's not a hot button for me personally because I'm not the marrying kind so the state allowing me to marry another man doesn't have much of an effect on me and my life. But I support it because it's fair and it will make many other people happy.

PEOPLE NOT INTERESTED IN POLITICS STOP READING HERE

I know a lot of people are upset about Edwards' comments about the recent decision in Missouri to ban same-sex marriage. I am neither surprised nor disappointed. He said exactly what I expected him to say. He and Kerry have both been on record about this for as long as I can remember. It's one of the reasons Kerry was never really my guy (a general lack of charisma and a basic misunderstanding as to the nature of the digital divide being a few of the others). But here's the thing: While I'm not in agreement with them in their opposition to gay marriage, I do agree that it is a decision that should be handled by the idividual states and unlike my conservative counterparts, I'm not going to pitch a fit when states make decisions I don't agree with.

Gay marriage is not what decides my vote. It never will be the one issue that swings me away or toward a particular candidate. Particularly in this election. I am a single issue voter this time around and my issue is this: Are you George W. Bush? If the answer is 'yes' then you don't get my vote. Because George W. Bush is evil. George Bush is destroying this country. I used to be proud of my country. Even when it was being run by people I was less than enthusiastic about, I was proud to be an American. George Bush took that from me. I don't know if Kerry can give it back to me, but I do know that another four years of George Bush in the White House certainly won't make things better. He has to be stopped no matter the cost. If that means voting for a candidate that opposes gay marriage then so be it. This is bigger than me and what I want. This man and his cronies cannot be allowed to continue holding power in this country. They're dangerous, and wrong-headed. They're in bed with religious extremists. They've cut taxes to the wealthy and run our economy into the ground. They took us to war over a lie and the man in charge of the largest arsenal in the history of the world can't even pronounce the word 'nuclear'.

If this one issue matters that much to you. If you can't vote for Kerry because of this, then I implore you to abstain in November. Don't throw you're vote away on a protest that will drag down the only significant threat to Bush's reign of fear. But know that if Bush wins in November I at least, am blaming you.
