thebratqueen for her extensive lists of posts about what we can all do to help in the aftermath of Katrina. But since I'm sure at least a few people who read my journal don't read hers I'm going to repost some links here for those who wish to help.
One of the easiest things to do would be to go to your local Coinstar machine. The website has a locator. It will take your spare change and donate it to the Red Cross. This is a good one for fannish people who tend not to be bogged down with a lot of extra money. Make note, that the Coinstar machine waives the counting fee (usually 8.9cents per dollar) for charitable donations.
sunfell has a rather extensive list of charities that people might wish to donate to. Also in that entry is a list of charities that people who are not evangelical Christians might not necessarily feel comfortable giving their money to.
For those in the New Jersey area wishing to take a more active role,
justhuman has posted a press release detailing the location of armories throughout the state that are accepting donations of bottled water for the NJ National Guard to take down south when they're deployed.
