This has been going around and I like it. It's an interesting thing to see what people I know think are the most basic things others should know about them.
1. I am a man. A very rare animal in my little corner of fandom. But it's an important thing to know about me since it colors the way I see the world. There's been a lot of spirited conversation about gender issues and especially male privelege lately. I fully understand that I benefit from male privelege. We're all a product of our society and where I'm from, society is definitely scewed to favor that which is male. It's something I've thought a lot about since most of my work and social time is spent with women. I don't think anyone can help those more subtle sexist leanings that get ingrained into our psyches. The thing for me to do is recognize where those leanings come from and recognize that the world is a very different place for women than it is for men.
2. I am a homosexual. I like the boys. Pretty much exclusively. Seriously, if you're not Gina Torres, Queen Latifah, or Teyla Emmagan (who oddly enough looks quite different from her real life alter ego) I really don't even want to think of you as a sexual being let alone actually have sex with you.
3. I am a fan and a slasher in that order. Which means I can watch House and be all 'OHMYGODHOUSEANDWILSONARESODOINGITSQUEE!!!!!11eleven' but still not get bored during all the House/Stacey scenes and appreciate the show for the mystery and character study of a brilliant but deeply flawed human being that it is. And I can read Harry Potter and accept the fact that I'm going to end up with Ron/Hermione and not want to kill JK Rowling. And that sometimes I even prefer to talk about what's going on in the show and not about men having sex.
4. I have very strong opinions. Some of which are liberal (gay rights yay!), some of which are conservative (pro-death penalty), some of which are considered pretty out there by most people (pro-euthanasia) and some of which are downright weird (I'm pretty much morally opposed to veganism). I enjoy arguing about all these issues and more at length, but am unlikely at this point to change my mind about any of them.
5. I am a Christian Lutheran to be precise. I've reconciled that quite satisfactorily with number 2. I do my best to live my life by Christ's example which to my way of thinking is to be charitable, compassionate, and honest. I make no value judgements on those who do not believe as I do. In fact, the world would probably be a better place if more Christians refrained from that particular behavior.
6. I am a nurse. I work with senior citizens mostly and am passionate about medicare reform. I believe the health care system in the USA is more deeply fucked up than anyone realizes and when you consider that most people in this country already think that the health care system in the USA is deeply fucked up, then that's pretty damn deeply fucked up.
7. I love meta but generally prefer to have those sorts of discussions in person. Not that I wouldn't enjoy seeing some comments on this.
8. I am not especially fond of other people. I've reconciled that quite saticfactorily with number 6.
9. I have a long fuse. In fact, I'm so laid back I'm practically dead. I don't anger easily or often. I'm easily frustrated by blatant stupidity, but anything else has to be pretty huge to make me any kind of upset. I'm quite proud of my ability to keep my head when things get hairy. I'm fully aware that some people see this as me being cold and distant, but I honestly don't see how losing my head over something benefits me or helps the situation in any way. Nor do I have any desire to feign excitement in order to seem more accessible. This has gotten me in trouble at work.
10. Roughly 75% of everything I say is meant to be funny. Mine is a dry wit. It's hard to catch sometimes. But if you laugh when I talk it means you get it, and I love you for it. Consider most of my LJ posts as part of that 25%. Which is not to say that I'm never out to amuse on LJ(see number 8), but it's a different medium of communication than having an actual conversation with someone.
