Not as much as I really wanted to, but some. I did manage to exercise and go to the grocery store. I also mailed the DVD remote that
natlyn left at my house. I was going to go to the mall and check out the bus schedule for my upcoming New York trip, but I've got time to do that later. Cleaned up the kitchen a bit, but mostly watched movies.
Third Man Out. A TV adaptation of one of Richard Stephenson's Donald Strachey mysteries starring Chad Allen. It's possible that my long term crush on Chad Allen is blinding me to faults in this movie. But this is the sort of gay movie I've wanted for a long time. It's politcal, but not angsty. The characters are gay, but that's not all they are. It seems like when most gay film makers produce movies there is at least some level of "we have to educate the straight people" running through the movie. I don't feel that here. And it's such a breath of fresh air. This one, I actually bought. The others are from Netflix.
And then there's And Then Came Summer. So very the opposite of Third Man Out in many respects. Fairly typical coming of age/coming out story. Family acceptance=good, aversion therapy=bad. We. Get. It. Mediocre acting, low budget, and a blink and you miss it appearance by Tom Lenk. Not bad for what it is, but can't really be characterized as a good movie. At least no one died.
I'm not much of a biopic person. Or even a 'based on a true story' person. But from the start Iron Jawed Angels had me riveted. I don't imagine there are many people on my friends list who haven't seen this already, but if you haven't you should. It's a wonderful film, expertly acted (Hillary Swank completely deserved her Emmy for this), and beautifully shot. The story of Alice Paul and Lucy Burns (Swank and the exceptional Frances O'Connor), and their struggle to obtain the passage of the 19th ammendmant. Well worth watching. I may actually have to buy this one.
