JC sat with Joey in his hotel room.

"Come to the show tonight." Joey said.

"My tickets are for next week."

"JC, I’m in the show. I can get you tickets."

"You know I can’t just go. We have to work things out with security."

"You can stay backstage."

"That’s no fun. It’s not the same when you’re backstage. You’re not really seeing the show. You’re just seeing people putting on a show."

"Yeah, yeah, I get it. You want the broadway experience. We’re going out tonight after. Do you want to come?"

"Sure."

"I’ll have security swing by for you before they pick me up."

And that was how JC found himself in a New York club at 10 minutes past midnight. According to Joey it was a popular after hours spot for theater people. JC looked to see if he recognized anyone else. He was staring at a woman who looked suspicisiously like Ashley Judd, but he couldn’t be sure. He thought he’d heard something about a movie she was doing in Chicago, but that might have been Charlize Theron, he never could tell them apart. He was broken from his thoughts by the sight of Joey hauling a man along behind him and presenting him to JC like a cat dropping a mouse at it’s owner’s feet.

"JC Chasez, meet Manley Pope." JC shook Manley’s hand.

"Nice to finally meet you." Manley said. "Joey talks about you all the time."

"He does?"

Manley nodded, gracing JC with a mega-watt smile.

"Joey’s told me a lot about you too." JC said, biting his tongue to hold back the ‘but he never told me how beautiful you are.’ That almost came out of his mouth.

"All good, I hope."

"Oh yeah. He says you’re awesome. Joey says you have a band?"

"Yeah." Manley said, then winced as the music changed to something hard and techno, and none too easy to talk over. He leaned into JC’s ear and had to shout "You want to go someplace a little more quiet?"

JC was tempted by the offer, but remembered why he had come there in the first place.
"I said I’d hang out with Joey." He yelled.

Manley pointed to spot behind JC. When he turned JC saw Joey on the dancefloor, obviously lost in the music dancing with no one in particular.

"I think he’s gonna be a while." Manley said.

JC looked back at Manley. He couldn’t be sure in the dim light of the club but JC thought he might be blushing.
"This is a setup, isn’t it?" JC asked.

Manley had the grace to look sheepish.
"Is that a problem?"

"No, not at all."

Manley looked relieved.

"So, what did you have in mind?" JC asked.

"What?"

"Someplace quieter. Where are we going?"

Manley nodded toward the door indicating JC to follow him, then took his hand and led him out. Once they got to the street he released JC’s hand.

"There’s a diner not too far from here. The food’s decent, and there are a lot of places to talk where you won’t be overheard."

JC nodded.

They were ushered to a corner booth in the back of the diner. Manley ordered pancakes which impressed JC who felt that there was no point in ordering anything but breakfast when you went to a diner after midnight.

Manley told him about rehearsals and other roles he was looking at when his time on RENT was finished. He also told JC all about his band.

JC told Manley all about the album he had just produced for Tony, and about some of the songs he had written for the new *NSYNC album.

At about 3am JC said that he had to get back to his hotel and go to sleep. Manley nodded then insisted on accompanying JC and walking him to his door because "I’m a gentleman."

To which JC replied "Well, I’m no lady."

"Oh, believe me, I have no trouble seeing that."

"Just so we’re clear on that." JC said as they stood in front of his door. They stood staring at each other. JC was tempted to invite him in, but decided against it. The best piece of dating advice he’d ever received was when he was 17 and Dale had told him ‘Just because you are a slut is no reason for him to think you are.’ So JC never asked men in on the first date.

"I’d like to see you again," Manley finally said.

"Do you have a cell phone?" JC asked.

Manley nodded.

JC held out his hand.

Manley looked perplexed for a moment, then handed his phone to JC. JC turned away so Manley couldn’t see and programed his number into the phone. He pulled Manley close to him by his waistband and kissed him as he slipped the phone back into Manley’s pants pocket.

"Call me," JC whispered as their lips separated.

"I will." Manley said and leaned in for another kiss.

When they parted again, JC opened his door. "Good night." He said with a mischevous smile.

"Good night," Manley whispered.

Once JC was in his room he pulled out his cell phone and called Joey. The phone rang five times before kicking over to voice mail.

JC chuckled when he heard a flatly sung "Speak" and then the beep.

"Thanks, Joey." he said then hung up. He took a shower and went to bed. When he woke he saw he had a text message waiting for him from Joey.

"YOU'RE WELCOME JC ;)"
