I was wondering about that myself.... Maybe fighting the Rebellion got in the way?

I always took Leia's comment to mean her adoptive mother -- there's a possibility that Bail's wife died young.

But Luke specifically asked her about her "real" mother (which implied that they'd had some sort of off-screen conversation about her being adopted).

Well...maybe she just has a really good memory of being in the womb and those few minutes before Mom kicked the bucket? Who knows what the Force can do to babies...?

I don't think the first Death Star was a new in episode IV. I think it had been "keeping the peace in other systems," so it's possibly that straight arrow Leia wouldn't have been aware of it or rumours of it and probable that old Ben Kenobi wouldn't be.
