I've seen a lot of griping lately about stumbling on stuff in LJ that's not "work safe". And I'm forced to wonder (as I have many times before), why are these people reading LJ at work? Aren't they supposed to be, I don't know...working? Now maybe it's just my jealousy over not having computers at work (which would make my job so much easier), let alone the internet. But I really do not understand how people can bitch about stumbling across porn on LJ like it's the poster's fault that they're doing something they're not supposed to be doing at work.

And it's not like I'm the kind of guy who never goofs off at work. But I take responsibility for my actions when I get caught doing something I'm not supposed to.

well, there *are* people who use work computers on their own time, and aren't doing anything wrong. But having porn and other nc-17 rated things end up in a cache and history that they can't change can actually be dangerous for their job security. So it's not always something they're not supposed to be doing. Personally, I get less annoyed at requests for "safe for work" cuts than I do for the bitching about spoilers.

The thing is, I know flist pretty well. With the kind of people I've got on it, I would never in a million years look at it at work even if it was during my break and I was allowed.

no, neither would most people. That's where 'not safe for work' warnings come in. Because someone may post something funny or amusing, or something gets put up in a community, and so you get a warning instead of clicking on it when you're not doing anything wrong at work.

It's also very common for employers to let people use their computers during their lunch hour or whatever breaks they are assigned, but still ban sexually explicit material from the computer.

I work in customer service and I can be online any time I want as long as I am not on the phone with a customer and as long as I am not looking at porn. I have to stay at my desk to take any calls so there is no back up. We are allowed to be online. And when I am going down a friends list and suddenly there is a big cock on my screen, my bosses aren't going to believe it was an accident. I think people should put stuff like that behind an LJ cut and warn of content. That's just my two cents worth... **shrug**

Well, as I said, I think part of my irritation over this is jealousy that people have computers at work at all, let alone ones that can get on the internet. Then there's the part of me that gets irritated when people try to tell me how to go about posting in my own journal. It also gets on my nerves that it's somehow up to me to keep you (in the general sense, not you personally) from getting in trouble at work while you surf the net.

But I sure haven't seen anything lately that I would complain about... I sure have seen people who've gotten their heads bitten off for not putting "spoilers" behind LJ cuts!

I've heard a lot of griping in general, nothing aimed at me in particular. I very rarely post porn. When I do post it, I put it behind a cut out of consideration for those with dial-up. It would honestly never occur to me to label it "work safe" or not.

People get nasty about spoilers too and that's not right. I myself am funny about spoilers. Somethings I want to know everything about (like Stargate: Atlantis) and somethings I avoid spoilers like the plague (like Serenity). But I really feel like it's up to me to avoid spoilers, not up to my friends list to protect me from them. But I think I'm more apt to cut for spoilers because it's one of those rules of fannish behavior that says it's impolite to spoil.
