So I see this pop up in some of the fic communities I'm on every once in a while. Someone will post a URL to their fic along with an apology for not using the cut tag because "I'm bad at LJ cuts". What the hell is that? How can you be bad at lj cuts? There's no skill involved. Either you know how to use it, or you don't. But how can you be bad at it?

Hmm. Well, as someone who has probably done this (not with a fic URL, b/c I don't write, but you know what I mean), I think "bad" is shorthand for, "I can never remember whether it's one word or two words or two words with a hyphen, and I'm too lazy to go look it up right now."

I know the first half-dozen times I tried to do an LJ cut, I used the wrong syntax and got an error and had to go look up the correct way to do it. Apparently I'm a slow learner with that kind of thing. It doesn't help that LJ is not especially consistent with how commands are styled (ljuser, but lj-cut, and sometimes you use quotation marks and sometimes you don't).

bad at=too lazy to check

It is a similar circumstance to all the posts from people whose browsers have mysteriously deleted their favoritest fic bookmarks, and also removed their ability to google for those them.
