I heard that a few weeks ago, and my first thought was that it was just a carryover from that never-die rumor that Justin was going to be in RENT on Broadway. my second was that they're just throwing his name around to get a little bit of extra press--like they did when they claimed Justin was interested in being in the next Superman movie (which I don't believe, either.)
Regardless that I'm a big Justin fan, and being pretty sure that he'd do a good job in any project he gets involved in, I really, really don't want a movie made out of RENT, whether Justin's in it or not.
I don't think a movie can capture the sort of... bare bones realism that the show uses; and I don't think the normal movie-viewing audience would be able to bring enough of themselves to appreciate it.
I'd really rather they didn't make a movie either. Though if they do make one, I'll probably go see it. I am not, as you know, a huge Justin Timberlake fan. I just don't think he's a strong enough vocalist to be Mark or Roger. I actually think he'd make a pretty decent Angel, but I don't think that'll ever happen.
Chris Columbus's people are already putting out polite "UH HAYELL NO, JUSTIN" public relations spins, saying things like "We feel this is a strong vocalist show that really needs power singers." Ouch.
I think Chris Kirkpatrick would make a fine Angel, though, don't you? Think about it. ;)
Hmm. I've never thought of Chris as Angel. It's an interesting idea. I was actually thinking that of all the major roles in the show, Angel would be the only one I would consider Justin appropriate for.
I've heard through the grapevine that Justin has his eye on Roger. I'm sure he doesn't want to do a reprise of Joey's role (Mark) and I can't see him taking a big enough risk to do Angel justice. I think Chris's countertenor falsetto and teeny size would make him perfect for Angel though.
I would kill to see Clay Aiken as Roger. He's already got the grungy spiky-haired hipster emo thing down, and his voice is very very similar in tone, timbre, range and quality to Adam Pascal's, excepting that Clay doesn't have all of Adam's pitch problems. Seriously, listen to Clay's version of "Solitaire" and tell me he wouldn't kill on "One Song Glory."
There is no universe in which Justin Timberlake has the vocal skills to play Roger. It would make me very, very sad if that were to happen. If I had my fondest wish come true, they'd cast Ewan McGregor. But that probably won't happen.
As for Clay, I can't say. I've never really heard him. My distaste for American Idol has prevented me from giving anyone on it a fair listen.

I understand. I have a feeling Clay would too. After all, Clay's distaste for the franchise (which seems to hate him right back, even though he's their only actual star) compelled him to fire the whole lot of them the very *day* his contract with them expired this month. All that aside, he's the finest pop tenor out there right now. I'd be happy to send over the MP3 of "Solitaire." It's nothing short of extraordinary.
Eh, I could see him working Mark, maybe. Or, no, to be honest, I see him either re-working Mark so he doesn't sound bad or admitting he can't hack it before they get too far into recording. I don't think he's an egomonster who would want to sound bad on film forever if he didn't need the face time, and I don't think he needs the face time.
The scary part of that sentence, really, is Chris Columbus is directing. CC seems to do the wholesome family friendly fare, and RENT shouldn't be made into that.
I think, actually, I'd like to see JC try for Angel. I don't know if he could deal with the range, but he would bring a very nice sensibility to the role.

Also, I will be happy to send you Clay's whole album (iTunes!), I liked it enough to put it on my regular rotation.
