"The constitutional amendment we're debating today strikes me as antithetical in every way to the core philosophy of Republicans. It usurps from the states a fundamental authority they have always possessed and imposes a federal remedy for a problem that most states do not believe confronts them."-John McCain addressing the Senate on the Federal Marriage Ammendment.

It really is one of the most un-Republican things I've heard of in a while.

Actually, that is the *most* Republican thing that could have been said.

Traditionally, the Republican Party has championed states rights above all else, believing that government works best in smaller units as opposed to on a grand scale (federally). Republicans have, until recently, pushed for a smaller Federal government.

While Republicans have generally always been more socially and fiscally conservative, it's really only been since the Reagan years that the party has been equated with ultra-conservative, evangelical Christians (the Religious Right) and their social agenda.

Oh, I know. When I said "it" I was referring the the ammendmant not McCain's comments which were the most Republican thing I've heard come out of a Republican's mouth in at least six years.
