"The constitutional amendment we're debating today strikes me as antithetical in every way to the core philosophy of Republicans. It usurps from the states a fundamental authority they have always possessed and imposes a federal remedy for a problem that most states do not believe confronts them."-John McCain addressing the Senate on the Federal Marriage Ammendment.
It really is one of the most un-Republican things I've heard of in a while.

Though I'm optimistically going to take some comfort in the hope that what he said greatly decreases the chances that Dubya will dump Cheney and pick McCain for a running mate. A Bush/McCain ticket would be much harder to beat.

Traditionally, the Republican Party has championed states rights above all else, believing that government works best in smaller units as opposed to on a grand scale (federally). Republicans have, until recently, pushed for a smaller Federal government.
While Republicans have generally always been more socially and fiscally conservative, it's really only been since the Reagan years that the party has been equated with ultra-conservative, evangelical Christians (the Religious Right) and their social agenda.
