Off World by Stephanie Vaughn:
So I put this on my Amazon wishlist just because it sounded vaguely interesting. There's not a lot of gay sci-fi out there. So when I had a little extra money I bought it. Now that I've read it, I'll say this: As someone who's been reading slash for, oh ten years or so, I have read this story dozens of times. A hardened warrior, strong and imposing, meets up with a younger, less physical, more intellectual man, andthentheyhavesex. The book itself was as well-written as any decent fic I've ever enjoyed. It was more porny than I thought it would be from the description. Not that I minded. It was all done pretty well, though I will say Vaughn sacrificed just a little bit of story for the sake of the romance. But what do you want for $12? She does do some interesting things with the future Earth she posits. Caleb, the diplomat on the run, was raised on an Earth where homosexuality is punishable by death. The book touches somewhat on his own issues having grown up gay in that culture and the shock of suddenly finding himself not only in love, but in the previously completely unreal situation of being able to pursue that love. All this is just sort of glossed over. It's there, but she never delves as deeply into it as she might. But overall, it was an enjoyable read and the next time I have some spare cash, I'll probably buy the sequel.
It wasn't the greatest book ever. But if you've enjoyed that story in fanfic as I have, you'll probably like this.
While reading books I tend to "cast" the characters with actors I know. As if I were making the film version in my head. For, Sarhaan, the hardened warrior, I cast Keith Hamilton Cobb circa Andromeda.

In fact, I'd be very surprised if, based on the character description, the author wasn't thinking along the same lines.
Caleb is described as small, but strong and graceful, with shaggy blond hair, brown eyes, and a pretty face. Well, I've been watching a lot of As The World Turns and seriously there's not a better description for Van Hansis.

I can't say it's a pairing I ever would've considered before, but by God, was it hot imagining those two going at in graphic detail.
